5 Simple Ways to Incorporate Daily Movement for Better Health

Moving your body on a daily basis is extremely important to maintain your physical and mental well-being. But there are some days when you just don't feel like getting out of the house (rainy autumn days, anyone?).

Not to worry - that's why I'm here today.

Here are 5 practical ways to incorporate movement into your daily tasks for those days when you feel like skipping the gym or the Pilates studio.

1. Stretch when you wake up

Start your morning with a few moments of stretching. It helps wake your muscles and get your blood flowing. Do some gentle stretches like touching your toes, stretching your arms, and hip circles. Open the window, take a deep breath of the fresh, morning air while stretching your arms above your head. Instantly makes you feel good, doesn't it?

2. Try a moving meeting

Walking and thinking go hand-in-hand. According to research, walking could increase creative output by as high as 60%. So why not incorporate it into your work? Instead of sitting through a meeting, try pacing around the room. It'll not only stimulate your brain but also help you get your daily steps in.

3. Get some housecleaning done

Cleaning the house gives you the one-two punch of creating a refreshed space and working your body. A bit of deep vacuuming or squeegeeing the windows will work your muscles and elevate your heart rate, with the added bonus of releasing endorphins which will reduce your stress levels and enhance your overall well-being.

4. Stand instead of sitting

Stand while you work. Invest in a standing desk and a walking pad. Standing burns more calories, and walking gets your blood flowing while boosting your productivity. Mayo Clinic actually recommends a walking desk setup to get your body moving and avoid sitting all day.

5. Take the long route

A brisk outdoor walk has a number of health benefits. It will reduce cholesterol, regulate blood sugar levels, and boost your mood. When you're out running errands, park your car farther away from the store entrance. Take the longer, scenic route when you're walking your dog.

Remember, consistency is key. Exercising is a choice you make every day. Incorporating these small habits into your daily routine will ensure that your body gets to move on a daily basis, and maintain your health and well-being.
